The many benefits of hypnobirthing- from a hypnobirthing mum and teacher

The benefits of Hypnobirthing are countless, not just for your birth, but also for your pregnancy and after your baby has arrived. The tools and skills you learn in your Hypnobirthing class will transform how you feel in your pregnancy, how you experience labour and your life afterwards- I still call upon my Hypnobirthing skills daily, and my youngest is 4 years old now.

After attending a Hypnobirthing course, you will feel calmer, and more relaxed in your pregnancy. This has direct benefits to you and your baby. It stabilises blood pressure, lowers the stress hormone in your system, and generally allows you to be in your system of calm. This will help with bonding with your baby, and attachment post birth. Also, remember, pregnancy is such a short, special time in your life- being able to experience it in the most positive pf ways will make it a memory to last a lifetime.

There are also benefits to baby and your partner too- partners who attend Hypnobirthing courses feel more involved in the pregnancy and birth, more confident in their abilities to support you during labour, and bond easier with baby.

  • Reduces the chance of induction and augmentation of labour
  • Hypnobirthing can shorten the length of labour
  • Hypnobirthing increases the chance of spontaneous birth
  • Hypnobirthing can lower the chance of a Caesarean birth
  • Hypnobirthing is associated with improved maternal well being
  • Hypnobirthing babies are often said to be calmer and more settled
  • Hypnobirthing is portable- possible my favourite.

Hypnobirthing is portable

I think this is my favourite benefit. You can take your Hypnobirthing anywhere. It can be used for all births, in all settings. Hypnobirthing will help you if you’re birthing at home, on the journey to the hospital, in a birth centre, labour ward or operating theatre for a caesarean birth. You don’t need to of remembered anything special in your hospital bag- if you have practised hypnobirthing, it is with you without the need for external items. Many of the techniques of Hypnobirthing, can be done on your own- breathing, visualisation, self hypnosis and movement. You will feel such a sense of confidence and empowerment knowing that you have those skills with you wherever your birth happens, and if plans change.

Also to add, a huge benefit of attending a in person course is connection. Connection between you, your birth partner and baby, but also between the other familes on the journey and with the teacher. A good teacher will allow time for discussion, questions and input. They can tailor the course to your specific needs, and really bring that accountability to your learning, checking in that you are doing the practise, so that all the above benefits have a stronger chance.

Remember Hypnobirthing is not about having a “perfect” birth, or a certain tone of birth. My clients have had everything from home birth, to hospital births with inductions, and planned and unplanned caesarean. Hypnobirthing provides you with a confidence, knowledge and skills to help you on your journey to a positive birth, however that looks.
